Tarbutt Optometrists

General information

In 1977, John Tarbutt purchased the practice from the recently deceased Peter Waterhouse. Peter had been an optometrist ahead of his time, who was involved with research and education and made a significant contribution to the progression and development of optometry in New Zealand. He worked closely with ophthalmology and developed expertise in contact lens fitting. He taught at the University of Auckland. From 1977- 1984 the practice was located upstairs in Victoria St above the ASB and law firm Lewis and Jecks. In 1984 we relocated to the current site, 33 Duke St, and through the years have expanded to take over the adjoining premises. Linda Tarbutt joined John in the practice in 1979 and in 1980 the practice became a partnership. Initially staffed with one receptionist, then an optical technician, the practice now has 4 optometrists, 2 dispensing opticians, 2 optometric assistants and a practice administrator.
