It specialises in online subscription news and information services for specific business sectors. It publishes a range of reports and maps, and runs industry events.

It was established in 2002 by Matt Freeman, publishing business magazines and websites in the telecommunications and IT sectors.

It launched Energy News in 2008 - a subscription-based news and information website for the New Zealand energy sector.

Energy News has already carved out a niche as the trusted source of New Zealand energy sector news and information.

It has since launched an excellence awards programme for the energy sector, The Deloitte Energy Excellence Awards, and also runs The New Zealand Petroleum Club. Print titles include a permit map for the oil and gas sector, and various special reports.

Freeman Media is a 50% joint venture partner in two large conferences - the New Zealand Petroleum Summit and Downstream.

In September 2013 it launched into the mining and quarrying sectors with the publication of Inside Resources, an online subscription-based web service, using the same formula as Energy News.

It has since launched the New Zealand Coal Exploration & Mining Map, to accompany its Petroleum Exploration and Electricity Infrastructure maps.

On LinkedIn it manages a number of groups. The large New Zealand Energy Sector Network is managed by Freeman Media.

It has received a range of fast-growth awards from Deloitte including: Asia-Pacific Technology and Media Fast 500 in 2011,2012,2013; and the New Zealand Fast 50 in 2012
