From local and artisan roots, Living Light Candles has grown into a producer of world-class designer products.
When it began in 1997, Living Light’s small team of candle makers was housed in a small shed on owner, Cynthia Baur’s Golden Bay property.
Cynthia came to New Zealand in 1984 with her knitwear label, a background that has led her to place design at the core of Living Light’s candle development.
Now, with a team of 15 staff, making over 400,000 candles each year, production is in a re-purposed dairy factory just behind the township of Takaka, a small distance from the original site.
Each candle is still fully handcrafted and Cynthia intends to remain New Zealand-made as she continues to expand.
As well as supplying to stockists throughout New Zealand, Living Light exports to Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore and plans to grow the export market over the next two years.
In 2012, Living Light welcomed a new partner in Bob Perriam, an entrepreneur and Southland farmer. Bob plans to replicate the success he had working with NZ Merino, in taking New Zealand-made luxury products to the world.
Adding to its two existing stores in Nelson and Golden Bay, Living Light has recently opened a flagship store in Takapuna, Auckland.
