Welcome to the beautiful Kapiti Coast; the stretch of coastline on the south-west of the lower North Island, 45 minutes north of Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city. 50kms from Wellington; a local government district which falls under the jurisdiction of the Wellington Regional Council. It includes Paekakariki in the south to Otaki in the north and hosts the towns of Te Horo, Waikanae, Paraparaumu, Raumati Beach and Raumati South; all famous for quality craft and artisan wares, and fresh foods and produce.

Kapiti is perhaps most famous for its world-renowned bird sanctuary, Kapiti Island. A prominent landmark it lies about 5km off-shore. Kapiti Island is one of very few island nature reserves in New Zealand accessible to visitors, giving them the opportunity to observe birds, other fauna and flora that are either rare or do not exist on the mainland, as well as reminders of its role as a whaling station in the 1800s. The north end of the island boasts a stunning marine reserve. The very observant will recognise Kapiti as the island featured in Peter Jackson’s re-make of King Kong.

Apart from the centrality of its location – airports which include flights to Aotearoa’s main cities, 3-4 hour drives to ski-fields, an hour from ferries which cross to the South Island, home-base for many commuters to and from the north and south of the area - Kapiti’s greatest appeal lies in its diverse attractions and activities. Few can resist: the area’s finely-crafted gourmet cheeses, olive oil and lavender products; visiting studios and galleries of iconic New Zealand artists such as Shona Moller; picnicking in Queen Elizabeth Park, the home to Wellington’s Tramway Museum, and coastal walking and biking tracks; meandering the historic Paekakariki Railway Station museum’s displays devoted to railways, the American marines’ occupation of the McKay’s Crossing area; admiring "The Engine Shed", where locomotives and rolling stock are restored and displayed, and from which steam-hauled excursions can be experienced; wandering the Southern Hemisphere's largest car collections at the Southward Car Museum; tramping and hiking the native bush of the Tararuas; fishing, white-baiting, kayaking, and other water-sports on the sea, rivers and lakes; and those for whom retail therapy appeals, the Kapiti Coast will satisfy.
